LAW & ORDER – WHERE DID THE CONCEPT OF POLICING COME FROM?

A long read but some clear insights into how policing came to be what it is today. “Johnson’s Great Society essentially ended when he asked Congress to pass the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act, which had the effect of diverting money from social programs to policing. This magazine called it “a piece of demagoguery devised out of malevolence and enacted in hysteria.” So “defund the police” is call to return to the day when America was great – when it valued social programs over punishment and control.

DEFUNDING THE POLICE INCLUDES DEFUNDING THE JAILS

“The vast majority of rapists never see the inside of a courtroom, let alone get convicted and end up in prison. In fact, they end up becoming president. So the system you feel so attached to and that you seem invested in preserving is not delivering what you say you want, which is presumably safety and an end to violence. Worse than that it is causing inordinate additional harm. The logics of policing and prisons are not actually addressing the systemic causes and roots of violence.”
